Taking classes from YouTube movies, a 25-year-old readymade garments vendor, who wished to recuperate losses suffered in the course of the lockdown, robbed two banks of Rs 12 lakh in Bhubaneswar, mentioned police on Monday.
The accused has been recognized as Soumyaranjan Jena, 25, alias Tulu, from Tangibanta village on the outskirts of town. He had robbed Indian Abroad Financial institution and Financial institution of India final month utilizing toy weapons for the theft, has been arrested, police mentioned.
Whereas speaking to media, Bhubaneswar-Cuttack Police Commissioner S Sarangi mentioned that the accused, who’s a readymade garments vendor, had taken loans from each the banks and was in monetary stress owing to the COVID-19 induced lockdown.
“He wished to recoup losses suffered in the course of the lockdown and robbed two banks of Rs 12 lakh in Bhubaneswar. He looted the Indian Abroad Financial institution, close to Infocity space on September 7, and the Financial institution of India’s Barimunda department in Mancheswar space on September 28. He received the thought of robbing financial institution whereas watching YouTube movies and used a toy gun to rob the 2 banks. Police recovered money amounting to over Rs 10 lakh and seized the car and the toy gun used within the theft,” mentioned the police commissioner throughout a press convention.
Soumyaranjan Jena had allegedly barged into the financial institution sporting a helmet when few workers members have been current and requested them at hand over the money.
“The accused has accounts in each the banks and had taken a mortgage of almost Rs 19 lakh and already paid 6 lakhs to the financial institution. He was arrested when he went to deposit Rs 60,000 from the looted cash. He assumed that if he’ll deposit small quantities of money no person will doubt him,” Police Commissioner mentioned.
