Costume designer Bhanu Athaiya, India’s first Oscar winner, died at her residence on Thursday after extended sickness, her daughter stated. She was 91.
Athaiya, who received an Oscar for her work within the 1983 movie Gandhi, handed away peacefully in her sleep, her daughter Radhika Gupta instructed PTI.
The final rites passed off on the Chandanwadi crematorium in South Mumbai.
“She handed away early this morning. Eight years in the past, she was recognized with a tumour in her mind. For the final three years, she was bedridden as a result of one facet (of her physique) was paralysed,” her daughter stated.
Athaiya, who was born in Kolhapur, started her profession as a dressing up designer in Hindi cinema with Guru Dutt’s 1956 tremendous hit C.I.D. She received the Academy Award for Finest Costume Design in Richard Attenborough’s Gandhi together with John Mollo.
In 2012, Athaiya returned her Oscar to the Academy of Movement Image Arts and Sciences for safe-keeping.
In a profession spanning 5 many years and over 100 movies, she received two Nationwide Awards – for Gulzar’s thriller drama Lekin (1990) and the interval movie Lagaan directed by Ashutosh Gowariker (2001).
