Sri Lankan police on Friday arrested three folks suspected of trapping and killing an endangered leopard and attempting to promote its meat as a treatment for bronchial asthma.
The trio had been detained after police raided their dwelling following a tip-off that that they had used a snare to catch the creature within the central highlands.
“They lower the pinnacle off and killed the animal after it obtained caught within the snare on Thursday,” chief inspector Dushantha Kangara advised AFP by cellphone.
He mentioned the suspects had thrown the leopard’s head within the forest and eliminated the carcass to promote the animal’s pores and skin, meat and different physique elements.
A number of leopards have been trapped by snares within the area, some 175 kilometres (110 miles) east of Colombo.
Kangara mentioned there was a well-liked perception that leopard meat might treatment bronchial asthma.
Police seized 17 kilos (37 kilos) of leopard meat from the three suspects.
There are believed to be fewer than 1,000 leopards within the wild in Sri Lanka, and harming the massive cat is punishable by as much as 5 years’ jail.
Wildlife conservationists have requested the authorities to ban snares and to prosecute those that use them.
