Italy’s Filippo Ganna gave the Ineos group a lift on Wednesday with a breakaway win within the fifth stage of the Giro d’Italia by way of the southern Calabria area. Ineos misplaced their lead rider Geraint Thomas to a broken pelvis on Tuesday, and subsequently promised to focus on stage wins as an alternative of the general standings. The powerfully constructed world time-trial champion Ganna crossed the road alone 34sec forward of a bunch of favourites together with Portugal’s Joao Almeida (Deceuninck) who retained the chief’s pink jersey. Austrian Patrick Konrad of the Bora-Hansgrohe group completed second simply forward of Almeida.

Ganna gained Saturday’s opening time-trial in Palermo, and on his first Giro d’Italia has two extra time-trials to focus on.

The race crossed to mainland Italy after 4 days in Sicily, overlaying 225km from Mileto to Camigliatello Silano.

Ganna was the only real survivor of a breakaway launched earlier than the 50km mark on the rolling slopes of the Valico di Montescuro, attacking with 17km to go.

The Italian left Belgian Thomas De Gendt and Colombian Einer Rubio in his wake, after the pair had counterattacked on the foot of the climb, cresting the summit one minute forward of his pursuers.

Within the descent, uneven and slippery within the rain, Italian two-time Giro winner Vincenzo Nibali set the tempo and examined his rivals.

Ganna held on for the stage win, whereas his compatriot Nibali seems to be in a powerful place within the total.

Thursday’s 199km sixth stage runs between Castrovillari and Matera in Basilicata area.
