A senior French navy officer stationed at a NATO base has been indicted and jailed on suspicion of spying for Russia, native media and sources stated on Sunday.

The French military officer was stationed overseas, a judicial supply stated confirming particulars from Europe 1 radio. In accordance with the report, the soldier was stationed on a NATO base in Italy and is suspected of espionage on behalf of Russia.

The French authorities confirmed it was investigating a senior navy officer over a “safety breach”.

“What I can affirm is senior officer is dealing with authorized proceedings for a safety breach,” Defence Minister Florence Parly instructed Europe 1 radio, CNews and Les Echos newspaper.

She gave no additional particulars.

The judicial supply stated the officer had been indicted and jailed on costs involving “intelligence with a international energy that undermines the elemental pursuits of the nation”.

He’s being prosecuted for “delivering info to a international energy”, “accumulating info harming the elemental pursuits of the nation with a view to delivering them to a international energy” and “compromising the secrecy of nationwide defence”, the supply stated.

Europe 1 stated the officer was a lieutenant-colonel stationed with NATO in Italy and had been positioned beneath investigation on suspicion of spying for Russia.

He speaks Russian and was seen in Italy with a person recognized as an agent of the GRU, the Russian navy intelligence service, the report stated.

It stated he’s suspected of getting provided delicate paperwork to Russian intelligence.

The person was arrested by DGSI intelligence service as he was about to depart for Italy on the finish of his holidays in France, and is being held at a jail in Paris, Europe 1 stated.
