A person armed with a knife momentarily took a guard hostage inside Milan’s cathedral on Wednesday however was shortly arrested, police stated.

He entered the well-known Gothic Duomo shortly after 1pm native time (1100 GMT) and “superior in direction of the personal safety guard, took out a knife and threatened him,” police spokesman Marco Turchetto advised AFP.

After the arrival of close by officers on patrol and a quick mediation, the person dropped the knife and was arrested, he stated.

Milan’s Deputy Mayor Anna Scavuzzo stated in an announcement the person had entered the cathedral with the intention to evade a police verify.

Police stated they had been attempting to find out the person’s id.
