The CPI(M) on Friday hit out on the authorities over the shortfall in GST revenues and claimed it was “blaming the heavens” after its “cronyism, incompetence and callousness” destroyed the financial system.

The Centre on Thursday positioned earlier than the GST Council two choices for borrowing by states to fulfill the shortfall in GST revenues pegged at Rs 2.35 lakh crore within the present fiscal.

Briefing reporters after the 41st assembly of the GST Council, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman stated the financial system has been hit by the COVID-19 pandemic, which is an ”Act of God”, and it’ll see a contraction within the present fiscal.

As per the Centre’s calculation, the compensation requirement by the states within the present fiscal can be Rs three lakh crore, of which Rs 65,000 crore is predicted to be met from the cess levied within the GST regime. Therefore, the overall shortfall is estimated at Rs 2.35 lakh crore.

Income Secretary Ajay Bhushan Pandey stated that out of this, Rs 97,000 crore is on account of GST shortfall, whereas the remaining is as a result of impression of COVID-19 on the financial system.
