US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Tuesday urged free elections in Hong Kong after China stated pro-democracy events’ primaries might have breached a tricky new safety regulation.

“Congratulations to Hong Kong’s pan-democrats for a profitable main. The Legislative Council election in September needs to be equally free and truthful,” Pompeo wrote on Twitter.
