The honesty of a 60-year-old rickshaw driver in Pune shone via the gloom of a virus outbreak, a crippling lockdown and monetary despair throughout as he returned a bag containing money and jewelry totaling Rs 7 lakh to its rightful proprietor.

On Wednesday, a pair had boarded the three-wheeler of Vitthal Mapare at Keshav Nagar space and alighted at Hadapsar bus-stand, abandoning the bag, the police mentioned.

“I moved forward and went to BT Kawade street the place I parked my automobile to have tea. It’s then that I seen this bag mendacity on the again seat. I didn’t open it and took it to Ghorpadi chowky close by and deposited it with sub-inspector Vijay Kadam there,” mentioned Mr Mapare narrating the chain of occasions.

Chatting with PTI, sub-inspector Kadam mentioned, “On opening the bag as per process, we discovered gold ornaments weighing 11 tolas, Rs 20000 money, all totaling Rs 7 lakh, and a few garments. We contacted Hadapsar police station because the couple had alighted there.”

“Hadapsar police instructed us Mahboob and Shanaz Shaikh had already approached them with a lacking bag grievance. The bag was handed over to them at Mundhwa police station and Mapare was felicitated by Deputy Commissioner of Police Suhas Bawche,” Mr Kadam added.

Mr Mapare, who has been a rickshaw driver for a number of years now, lives in a rented home and his son works in a personal agency.

Mr Mapare mentioned he was pleased with the reward that he was getting over the previous two days and thought of it his largest reward in life.
