Serena Williams withdrew from the WTA clay-court event that begins Monday in Rome attributable to a left Achilles tendon damage sustained in her US Open semi-final defeat, the tour introduced Saturday. Williams, chasing her record-tying 24th Grand Slam single crown, lost to Victoria Azarenka in three units on Thursday on the Arthur Ashe Stadium hardcourt.
The previous world primary, a four-time Rome champion, joins 2019 US Open winner Bianca Andreescu and two-time Wimbledon winner Petra Kvitova in skipping the tuneup for the French Open, which begins on September 27.
“I regretfully should withdraw from the Internazionali BNL d’Italia attributable to an Achilles pressure,” Williams stated in a press release. “I am so humbled by the continual assist from my followers in Rome and I sit up for making my return quickly.”
Williams took a medical timeout in her New York loss to have the Achilles damage handled.

“I simply was stretching,” she stated after the match. “I ran for a shot, and off that first step that I took, it was a protracted level. It wasn’t my ankle, it was really my Achilles. It simply overstretched. It was fairly intense. Then that was that.”
Prime-ranked Ashleigh Barty withdrew from Rome earlier within the week, the Australian star saying she would shut down her season attributable to coronavirus considerations and journey restrictions.
