The USA on Wednesday introduced sanctions and restrictions on two dozen Chinese language corporations and related officers for participating in constructing synthetic islands in disputed waters within the South China Sea.
The 24 state-owned companies embody subsidiaries of building large China Communications Development Co., telecommunications companies and a unit of the China Shipbuilding Group.
The transfer was the newest step in Washington’s efforts to strain Beijing over its navy buildup in areas of the South China Sea the place sovereignty is contested by a number of nations.
The US Commerce Division mentioned the businesses “enabled China to assemble and militarize disputed outposts within the South China Sea.”
“Since 2013, the PRC (Folks’s Republic of China) has used its state-owned enterprises to dredge and reclaim greater than three,000 acres on disputed options within the South China Sea, destabilizing the area, trampling on the sovereign rights of its neighbors, and inflicting untold environmental devastation,” Secretary of State Mike Pompeo mentioned in a press release.
The 24 corporations have been positioned on the Commerce Division’s “Entity Checklist” which permits it to dam exports of US items and supplies to them.
As well as, Pompeo mentioned people related to the South China Sea operations shall be unable to acquire visas to go to the USA.
