President Donald Trump introduced Wednesday that he had approved Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to activate a controversial mechanism geared toward reimposing UN sanctions on Iran.
The transfer escalates a diplomatic spat with European allies on the United Nations Safety Council that may have large repercussions for the Iran nuclear deal.
“At the moment I am directing the secretary of state, Mike Pompeo, to inform the UN Safety Council that america intends to revive nearly the entire beforehand suspended United Nations sanctions on Iran,” Trump advised reporters.
