The India Meteorological Division (IMD) on Thursday predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall at remoted locations in Mumbai and adjoining coastal districts, and issued an orange alert for the subsequent two days.
An orange alert implies that authorities ought to be ready to deal with any scenario arising out of extreme climate circumstances.
Ratnagiri district, which bore the brunt of cyclonic storm Nisarga final month, is prone to obtain extraordinarily heavy rainfall at remoted locations on Friday, whereas Raigad will obtain related downpour on Saturday, senior director of IMD Mumbai, Shubhangi Bhute, stated.
Heavy to very heavy rains are prone to lash remoted locations in Mumbai, she stated.
As per the IMD’s calculations, a rainfall between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm in 24 hours is taken into account as heavy rainfall, whereas a downpour between 115.5 and 204.5 mm could be very heavy rainfall.
Rainfall above 204.5 mm in 24 hours is categorised as extraordinarily heavy rainfall.
“An orange alert has been issued for Friday and Saturday for areas which can be prone to witness heavy showers and residents and authorities in these locations should keep vigilant,” one other IMD official stated.
In view of the IMD alert, Mumbai Police suggested residents to not enterprise out of their houses.
