During a routine inspection at the Rampur check post, officers from Kishanganj district detained a lone individual who was found with 340 illegal lottery tickets tucked inside a nylon bag. The suspect, whose identity has not been released, was stopped as he attempted to board a local bus heading toward the state border. A quick inventory confirmed that every ticket bore the markings of an unlicensed lottery scheme that operates outside the authority of the Bihar government.
Police say the routine check was part of a broader surveillance program aimed at monitoring transport corridors frequently used by smugglers. Once the tickets were seized, the team secured the evidence and transferred the suspect to the district headquarters for further questioning.
Authorities in Bihar have stepped up efforts to dismantle a network that sources lottery slips from neighbouring West Bengal and floods the market in border districts. Recent weeks have seen a string of seizures in Purnia, Araria and Katihar, each involving dozens of tickets and, in some cases, cash payouts to local agents.
Investigators believe the tickets found near Rampur are just a fragment of a larger operation that uses a chain of middlemen, transport drivers and informal vendors to reach small towns and villages. Interrogations of the arrested individual are expected to reveal the identities of other couriers and possibly the upstream suppliers in West Bengal.
State officials have warned that the illegal lottery business not only flouts gambling laws but also fuels other criminal activities, including money laundering and bribery. To counter this, the police have deployed additional check posts along major highways, increased spot raids on suspected distribution hubs, and launched public awareness drives warning citizens about the risks of participating in unauthorized lotteries.
While the investigation remains ongoing, the Kishanganj team says the recent bust sends a clear signal that the government will not tolerate the proliferation of unlawful gambling. Further updates are expected as more members of the network are identified and brought to justice.
