An 80-year-old man was allegedly buried alive by his relations in Meghalaya over the suspicion that he practiced witchcraft, police stated. Eight folks, three of whom are his nephews, have been arrested to this point, they added.

The physique of the person with palms and legs tied and face coated was exhumed from a five-feet-deep pit on Monday and despatched for autopsy.

“Eight individuals have been arrested in reference to the incident that came about on the evening of October 7,” Superintendent of Police Herbert Lyngdoh was quoted as saying by  information company PTI.

Moris Marngar was forcibly taken away from his home by his relations from his village in West Khasi Hills on October 7. A day later his kids reported the matter to village authorities, who infomred the police.

Three principal accused — Denial, Jayles and Differwell, all of whom his nephews, have been arrested on October 11; 5 others have been arrested the next day.

On the idea of their assertion, the physique coated with stones and a cross engraved with the phrase “RIP” was recovered, the police official stated. The sufferer’s palms have been tied to his again, and his legs have been coated in a sack and tied with a rope, he added.

The sufferer’s nephews had alleged that their uncle had forged evil spells on one in every of his nieces and different relations.

The niece was sick for the final three months, and her household blamed Mr Marngar for her sickness. The accused reportedly instructed police that the lady recovered following Mr Marngar’s demise.

The police, in keeping with information company PTI, suspects involvement of 18 members of the prolonged household within the killing.
